Summary

  • The Embraer E195-E2 has received type certification from China, allowing it to be sold in the country.
  • The E195-E2 is positioned as an environmentally efficient aircraft that could offer complementary capacity to China's indigenous planes.
  • Embraer is confident about its growth prospects in Asia, with several E-Jets already flying with Chinese airlines.

The Embraer E195-E2 has received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This comes within a year of the certification of the E190-E2 received from CAAC in November last year during the Zhuhai Air Show. Embraer hopes to make further inroads into the Chinese aviation market, and the latest certification is a step in that direction.

E195-E2 certified in China

Embraer has announced that China has granted type certification to its E195-E2 aircraft, allowing it to sell the plane in the country. This is a milestone for the Brazilian plane manufacturer as it looks to consolidate its presence in the second-largest aviation market in the world. Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, commented,

“Our team in China is actively working with potential customers and making good progress. There are significant opportunities for the E2 in China, which offers complementary capacity to China’s indigenous ARJ21 and C919 aircraft; combined, they provide flexible, efficient, and eco-friendly options for Chinese airlines, meeting the demand of the world’s fast-growing air transportation market.”

Guo Qing, Managing Director and VP Commercial Aviation, Embraer China, added,

“China is moving closer to carbon neutrality. The E195-E2 is the most environmentally efficient aircraft in its class. With a maximum of 146 seats, E195-E2 is the right size to profitably complement larger narrowbodies on lower density routes, connecting regional airports and offering travelers living in secondary and tertiary cities with one-stop access to routes worldwide.”

Months after the E190-E2 was certified

The development comes within a year of the Embraer E190-E2 receiving approval from Chinese authorities in November 2022. Embraer pitched the E195-E2 jet to Asian markets with an extensive tour in countries including China, Japan, and India last year.

The aircraft debuted at the 14th Airshow China 2022 to impress Chinese customers by highlighting the advantages of the aircraft over its competition. The E2 jets have been pitched as possessing the flexibility and 'right-sized' capacity to allow operators to penetrate regional markets, build connectivity, and meet the post-pandemic rebound.

The E195-E2 is a young aircraft and entered into service in 2019 with Azul. It’s the largest member of the E-Jet family and accommodates between 120 and 146 passengers. A fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft, it provides 25% better fuel efficiency per seat compared to previous generation E-Jets.

Confident about Growth in Asia

Embraer is closely monitoring the development of the Asian aviation market and is assessing how its jets can serve the region and win more customers. Embraer has been serving the Chinese market for 23 years, as the first Embraer ERJ145 was delivered to Sichuan Airlines in September 2000.

In May 2008, Embraer delivered its first E-Jet, an E190, to Tianjin Airlines. Today, 85 E-Jets fly with Tianjin Airlines, Hebei Airlines, Beibu Gulf Airlines, and Colorful Guizhou Airlines in China.
