Assisting the residents of Maui

The Hawaiian island of Maui is currently being ravaged by wildfires that have virtually destroyed an entire town, Lahaina, and have already taken the lives of multiple people. United States President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency for the island, and federal funds will be used to assist with the local needs. Airlines are also doing their part, with United Airlines announcing it is sending empty aircraft to the island and American Airlines upgrading aircraft to assist with the evacuation efforts.

In a statement shared on Twitter, the Chicago-based carrier said,

"Safety is the first priority for our customers and employees, and we are closely monitoring the devastating conditions in Maui. Today’s flights to Kahului Airport have been canceled so our planes can fly empty to Maui and be used to bring passengers back to the mainland.

United added that it currently has a waiver in place for Maui flights. Passengers with flights to/from Maui between August 11-31, whose tickets were purchased before August 9, can reschedule their flights without paying change fees and fare differences. The new flight must depart between August 10 and September 7. United will offer a full refund for those who wish to cancel their trip.

American is also waiving change fees and offering full refunds for those with flights to and from Maui. Additionally, the airline is partnering with the American Red Cross to assist with relief efforts. AAdvantage members can earn ten bonus miles per every dollar donated on donations greater than $25.

“American Airlines continues to monitor the wildfires in Maui, Hawaii (OGG) with our customers’ and team members’ safety top of mind. We’re supporting evacuation efforts by adding additional flights out of Maui and upgrading aircraft to provide more seats. To provide additional flexibility, American issued a travel alert, allowing customers whose travel plans are affected by the wildfires to rebook without fees, cancel or receive a refund. Customers can reschedule their travel on aa.com or by contacting Reservations at 800-433-7300 in the United States or Canada."

Customers are encouraged to check for updates on American Airlines' website as the situation changes.

Alaska Airlines is also helping

Alaska Airlines is the latest airline to get involved, sending a rescue flight from Seattle to Maui earlier today filled with supplies like water, non-perishable food, pillows, blankets, towels, wipes, baby formula, and diapers.
